Are there any restrictions in making my character?

Yes. You cannot have the exact same name and biography as a character from the books. If you're having difficulty coming up with a name, try the Fantasy Name Generator.

Your character cannot join as a blademaster. This is a skill you must learn here at the Tower.

A channeler character cannot start out with conscious knowledge of any complex weaves other than simple wilder tricks. You may not come to us as an Aes Sedai from the White Tower or an Asha'man from the Black Tower, though you may well be a runaway untrained Novice or Soldier from either of those establishments. A Gaidin character cannot have the ability to channel.

Can I have more than one character in the Grey Tower?

Yes, but only under certain specific conditions. See the Secondary Character Rules for further information.

Can I return to the Grey Tower as a previous character?

If you used to be a Grey Tower member at any time in the past, but have since been removed from the member listings due to inactivity, or because you left, you are welcome to return to the Grey Tower at any time, at the rank at which you left. We keep records of the rank of every character who has ever been at the Tower, and we know which rank you were when you left. It is assumed IC that your character was absent from the Tower for some reason, and has now returned.

You must fill out the Return Form with the details of your situation. The Tower Officers will then decide under what conditions you may return. It is usual to ask for an updated biography, along with a fanfic to explain where your character has been, and what has happened to him/her. This is considered part of your character development, to help get you back into the swing of the Tower, and to give those you are RPing with an idea of your character's history.

You must be prepared to be flexible upon your return to the Tower: many things may have changed since you were last a member, and you should try and adapt to these changes to avoid causing conflict.

If you held an official position above Gaidin/Asha'man/Aes Sedai when you left, you will not necessarily resume this automatically on your return. Any returning Aes Sedai/Asha'man/Gaidin must wait at least one month before he/she may be considered for a position of authority: this 'settling in' period ensures that you are up to date with the Tower before you become active in the Hall of Sitters. Please note that this applies only to people who were absent OOC as well as IC; if your character was absent but you remained here to play second character, then your original character does not have to wait before being eligible for authority.

If you were in any of the learning ranks, you return at the rank at which you left. If you have proof of any previous completed RRs, and the MoS/N/T agree that it is acceptable, then previously completed RRs may count. However, you must wait at least 2 weeks after returning before you are eligible for Raising, to settle back in, even if this is longer than the RR would normally require.

If you are one of the four 'blacklisted' people who have been forcibly removed from the Tower in the past due to disciplinary problems, you may NOT rejoin at all, as any character, without the express permission of the M'Hael and the Amyrlin Seat.

Can I transfer an existing character to the Grey Tower from another WoT RP website?

No, you may not. You may well be accustomed to playing an Aes Sedai, Asha'man, Sitter, Tamyrlin or Trollocbuster General at the Tower of Faith, Hope, Charity or Blue Cheese, but when you begin at the Grey Tower, you must step into our reality on a level footing with everyone else, with a new character, new history, and ready to learn and develop from the basics right upwards. Your Grey Tower character can have the same name as one of your characters from another site, but he/she may not already have all the training and experience and rank he/she may have received there.

That said, we do welcome new character applications from people who also roleplay at other sites: your RP experience is a valuable addition to the Grey Tower, and we hope you'll enjoy building up a character here as much as you have elsewhere, if not more!

    How do I get raised?

To advance, you must fulfill all raising requirements for your current rank. When you have done so, e-mail the appropriate person (see below) with proof of your raising requirements and ask him/her for the raising test. (Note that any and all outstanding formal punishments must be completed prior to raising. See here for more details.)

What are the requirements for getting raised?

Please refer to the appropriate raising page for a complete list of raising requirements. There is one for channelers, another for Warders in Training, and a final set for secondary characters.

Whom should I contact with my raising requirements?

The person to contact depends on your character type, but all raising requirements and requests for raising tests should be sent to admin, in case the official is on shara and another member of admin is covering for them.

Novices and Accepted: Mistress of Novices <mon@grey-tower.net>

Soldiers and Dedicated: Master of Soldiers<mos@grey-tower.net>

    Drin'Far'Ji, Ji'Alantin and Sa'ji'alantin: Master of Training <mot@grey-tower.net>

How do I choose an Ajah, or change my Ajah choice?

Upon joining the Tower, you are asked if you are already definitely interested in one Ajah above the others. This is intended so that those who already know which Ajah they like most, can be assigned a mentor from that Ajah. Otherwise, most people select "undecided". This choice does not affect anything except the mentor assigned to the newly arrived character.

During time as a Novice or Soldier, characters are encouraged to investigate the Ajahs, and choose the one that best suits them. By the time they are ready to be Raised to Accepted or Dedicated, they should have one Ajah in mind above all others. This is their Ajah of Aspiration, and is declared in the Test of the Arches. Each Accepted and Dedicated aspires to one Ajah.

During time as an Accepted or Dedicated, the character interacts with his or her Ajah of choice, and gains acceptance into it as part of his or her final Raising Requirements. He or she is then Raised into that Ajah.

A Novice or Soldier has no Ajah of Aspiration, and does not have to decide until the Test of the Arches.

If an Accepted or Dedicated wishes to change his or her Ajah Aspiration, (s)he must contact the Mistress of Novices or Master of Soldiers, and ask them to change it. (S)he must complete an interaction with, and be accepted into the new Ajah of Aspiration, before Raising into that Ajah can happen. If (s)he has already completed Raising requirements with the old Ajah of Aspiration, it is up to the MoN/MoS as to whether these are valid for Raising into the new Ajah.

If an Aes Sedai or Asha'man wishes to change his/her Ajah, it has been decided that (s)he may contact the Amyrlin Seat and M'Hael and plead his/her case. They will then consult with involved Ajah Heads to see if the change is permissible, and may set conditions on it, as appropriate. Please note, however, that Ajah changes are almost never allowed amongst Aes Sedai and Asha'man, so make sure you choose correctly first time!

How do I become a Sitter?

As decided by the Hall of Sitters and officers, the following procedures govern the appointment and removal of Sitters:

    • ~The awarding of Sitterships is the choice of the Ajah Head, unless the Ajah should decide on another reasonable method of selection. No more than three Sitters shall be allowed in the Hall from each Ajah. A Sittership is not official until the Ajah Head has informed the M'Hael and Amyrlin Seat, who will list it on the Member Listings and the Hall of Sitters.
    • ~Removal of a Sitter shall be left up to the discretion of the Ajah Head. If a Sitter has not posted in the Hall of Sitters in two months or has not participated in two votes in a row, the Amyrlin Seat and M'Hael should speak to the Ajah Head to see if any action has been taken to determine the Sitter's OOC status. Further action may be taken if no consistent improvement is seen, and no mitigating circumstances apply.
    • ~A Sitter who is removed shall have the right to appeal the decision of the Ajah Head to the Amyrlin Seat and the M'Hael, but must accept their decision as final.

What does an Ajah Head do?

Firstly, in the Grey Tower, unlike the White Tower, the identity of the Head of each Ajah is public, both OOC and IC. As decided by the Hall of Sitters and officers, the following procedures govern the appointment, conduct and removal of Ajah Heads:

The Duties of an Ajah Head:

-to either keep the Ajah pages updated, or appoint a Webmaster/mistress, and ensure that he/she does so.

-to vote on issues in the Hall of Sitters.

-to appoint the most capable members of the Ajah as Sitters to represent the Ajah in the Hall.

-to represent the Ajah personally during discussions in the Hall, and if appropriate, to coordinate the voting of the Ajah's Sitters to reflect the view of the Ajah on issues.

-to make sure Aspirants to the Ajah always have somebody to roleplay with for their interaction.

-to make sure there is always someone from the Ajah available to take on the occasional newly joined mentee who expresses a particular interest in that Ajah, even if this means taking on extra mentees him/herself.

-to be available to answer any questions about the Ajah OOC.

-to make sure someone from the Ajah is available to participate in RPs where the Ajah's presence is required.

Regarding the choosing of an Ajah Head:

~If an Ajah Head leaves of his/her own volition, he/she will consult his/her Ajah members and together, they will decide on a successor in a manner of their choosing. If, however, after this process there are still strong objections to the decided successor from members of the Ajah, those members should contact the M'Hael/Amyrlin, explaining the reasons why they object. If these reasons are found to be serious, the M'Hael and Amyrlin may initiate more discussion of the successor within the Ajah, in light of these objections.

~If the Ajah Head is removed from his/her position by those guidelines listed under 'Regarding the removal of Ajah Heads', the Sitters, Ajah members will discuss and decide on a successor. If no definite successor is decided, if there are problems with the discussions or if their help is requested, the Amyrlin and M'Hael will mediate in the discussion and may decide to hold an Ajah vote to resolve the issue.

~If all other methods above should fail, then the choice of the new Ajah Head shall be left to a vote of the six remaining Ajah Heads, the M'Hael, the Amyrlin and the Keeper, due to their experience and knowledge of the duties and responsibilities of the position as well as the candidates themselves. Each of these persons shall cast one vote in favor of the candidate of their choice. The candidate receiving the plurality of votes (i.e. the most, regardless of whether a majority of votes goes to a candidate) will be instated as the new Ajah Head.

Regarding the removal of Ajah Heads:

~An Ajah Head may be removed under the following guidelines:

-If two or more complaints are received by the Amyrlin and M'Hael from members of the Ajah about the Ajah Head, an investigation of whether these complaints are valid is to be conducted, considering the duties above, and any other considerations. The Amyrlin and M'Hael should discuss the matter with the Ajah Head in question as well as the members of the Ajah and take further action if necessary.

-If the Ajah Head has not posted for 2 months in the Hall of Sitters, the Amyrlin and M'Hael shall discuss the matter with them, and further action may be taken if no improvement is seen.

-If other issues arise regarding the Ajah Head's fitness to maintain their position, the Amyrlin and M'Hael shall discuss the matter with them and the members of the Ajah and further action may be taken if no consistent improvement is seen, and no mitigating circumstances apply.

-If the members of an Ajah decide during discussions to remove an Ajah Head, but the Ajah Head refuses, the Amyrlin and M'Hael shall actively remove them in favour of the Ajah's choice.

    What is a bond?

A bond is a One-Power-forged link between an Aes Sedai or Asha'man and a Warder. Aes Sedai may bond a Gaidin, Gaidar or Asha'man as a Warder, while Asha'man may either be bonded by an Aes Sedai, or bond a Gaidin or Gaidar of their own, but not both! By accepting the bond, the Warder pledges his life in the defense and service of his Aes Sedai or Asha'man, in return for faster healing, the ability to sense Shadowspawn, and the ability to go for longer periods without food or rest.

Asha'man may only bond Warders if they have not been bonded as Warders to an Aes Sedai.

What does the word "promise" mean?

A promise is simply an agreement between two people to bond each other when they reach the appropriate rank. It is not a requirement for bonding.

What are the requirements for bonding?

As above, an unbonded Asha'man can bond a Gaidin or Gaidar as their Warder, while an Aes Sedai can bond an Asha'man, a Gaidin or a Gaidar. OOC, the players of both characters must agree to the bonding.

There is a limit to the number of Warders an Aes Sedai or Asha'man can bond. An Aes Sedai or Asha'man bonds only one Warder, unless (s)he is of the Green Ajah, in which case (s)he may bond up to four Warders.

    How do I get bonded?

Please fill out the bond form to inform admin of the bonding and get posted on the Bond List. An announcement at the Main MB or a ceremony at the Day to Day is customary, but not required.

    Can I get unbonded?

No. A bond cannot be broken as long as the Warder is alive. There are only two ways to remove a bond.

Death. If your bondmate dies (IC) or leaves the Tower (IRL) then you are released from the bond.

Inactivity. If your bondmate is inactive for more than two months IRL without warning, you may choose to release yourself from the bond by terminating his/her character.

You also may pass the bond of a Warder to another suitable Aes Sedai/Asha'man, if there is a suitable reason, but this is rarely done.

    Can I play a ta'veren character?

It is possible, but the use of ta'veren is limited. Your character may be temporary ta'veren as long as the correct procedures and restrictions are followed. They are:

    1. Those who wish to use the ability must send a detailed application to the Amyrlin for female members of the Tower, or the M'Hael for male members, stating how they plan to use it and for how long they expect to use it. Should either feel they should not make the decision it will be passed to the Indigo Ajah Head. These officials do have the right to refuse the application.
    2. The use of the ability is limited to a single major roleplay, fanfic, lengthy thread, or story line.
    3. The use of the ability is restricted solely to the person(s) who applied for it.
