It was long ago, but something Alarielle would never forget – realising that it was possible to travel. Back then she hadn’t known that it was called Travelling, all she knew what that two people appeared in the distance out of no-where.
She’d been about 8 years old on one of her father’s summer trips home. This year he had decided that she was old enough to ‘join him on an adventure’ as he put it. It was a simple picnic really, but any time with her father was special, and to get almost a whole day with him to herself was unheard of. They had got up early and packed a small picnic basket; bread rolls, sweet cakes, a water skin, some dried meat and her father’s pipe and tobacco. She even got to help her father saddle Raif. Raif was a strong brute with scars on his haunches from some of her father’s more interesting negotiations and sales, but he was sweet tempered and adored Alarielle. They rode for several hours with Alarielle holding the pommel of the saddle whilst her father guided Raif with an arm round her waist. They didn’t speak, being close together was special enough.
Around midday they stopped at a small thicket and her father made camp. He produced a small blanket from the saddlebags and they sat together eating their lunch, swapping stories of people who visited the shop, and traders in distant lands. Alari’s father opted to take a small nap knowing she would be safe here, allowing her to wander the outskirts of the thicket. It was from this vantage she saw the lady and gentleman appear in the distance at another thicket. Her father didn’t believe her when he woke, but she was certain she saw a portal open and both of them walk through, leading their horses. The more details she attempted to give her father, the more convinced he was that she has sunstroke and had been seeing things.
On the journey home Alari sulked, convinced what she’d seen was true, and determined to one day prove it.
